Agape Vespers at Pantokrator Monastery
On the day of the radiant Resurrection of the Lord (2025), the Agape Vespers was celebrated with solemnity and Paschal joy at the Pantokrator Monastery, sealing the festal celebration of Pascha and opening the bright period of the Resurrection.
The brotherhood of the monastery gathered in the katholikon, where, within the light of the Resurrection and according to the Athonite liturgical order, hymns of praise were offered to the Risen Christ. Pilgrims who were present participated prayerfully in the service, experiencing the peace and joy of the Church.
What is Agape Vespers
Agape Vespers is served on the afternoon of Pascha Sunday and is one of the most characteristic services of the Resurrection.
Its central element is the reading of the Holy Gospel (John 20:19–25) in multiple languages, expressing the universal message of the Resurrection and the calling of all nations to the truth of Christ.
The name “Agape” (Love) refers to the spirit of brotherly unity and peace granted through the Resurrection, as the faithful exchange the Paschal greeting “Christ is Risen,” manifesting their common joy and reconciliation in Christ.
The Celebration at Pantokrator Monastery
At the Pantokrator Monastery, the service was celebrated according to the Athonite tradition, with Byzantine chant and liturgical solemnity.
The Holy Gospel was read in accordance with the established order, bearing witness to the catholicity of the Church, while the atmosphere was filled with peace, light, and spiritual joy.
The service stood as a living testimony of the Resurrection, where the brotherhood and the pilgrims shared in the unity of faith and the presence of the Risen Lord.
“Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death,
and upon those in the tombs bestowing life.”
