BROTHERHOOD OF THE MONASTERY

The Brotherhood of Pantokrator Monastery on Mount Athos

The cenobitic brotherhood of the Holy Monastery of Pantokrator on Mount Athos began its modern spiritual course in the spring of 1992, when, following a decision of the Patriarchal Exarchate and the Holy Community of Mount Athos, a group of monks from the Monastery of Xenophontos undertook the staffing and restoration of the monastery to the cenobitic system.

The Holy Monastery of Pantokrator, which had functioned under the idiorrhythmic system since the 17th century, thus returned to the traditional cenobitic monastic life, continuing the authentic Athonite tradition.

With the first abbot, Elder Vissarion, the new brotherhood settled in the Monastery on 6 May, the feast of Mid-Pentecost, marking a new era of spiritual renewal and reconstruction.

The Restoration of the Cenobium and the Spiritual Renewal of the Monastery

With the arrival of the new brotherhood, the restoration of cenobitic life in Pantokrator Monastery began according to the tradition of the Holy Fathers and the Athonite typikon. The transition from the idiorrhythmic to the cenobitic system marked a decisive milestone in the spiritual revitalization of the Monastery.

At the same time, the monks undertook the demanding work of restoring the old monastic buildings, preserving the historical and architectural heritage of the Holy Monastery of Pantokrator on Mount Athos.

After the repose of the first abbot, Elder Vissarion, in 2001, the brotherhood elected a new abbot, Hieromonk Gabriel, continuing faithfully the monastic and cenobitic work.
